Ear Health Check

Specialist ENT Ear Health Check

Want to know exactly what is going on inside your ear? A specialist ear assessment from Millar Ear Care will give you a comprehensive understanding of your ear health, with a vastly experienced Nurse Practitioner examining your ear canal, using advanced microscopic technology.

Millar Ear Care Examination

Whether you are experiencing hearing loss, tinnitus, or simply want to ensure your hearing remains at its best, our expert team delivers compassionate care tailored to your individual needs.

Unlike standard NHS appointments that may have limited time allocation, our comprehensive ear assessment allows detailed examination of one or both ears using state-of-the-art equipment.

Comprehensive Ear Health Check

When you choose Millar Ear Care for your Ear Assessment, you can rest assured that no stone will be left unturned.

Initial Consultation with a Nurse Practitioner

Your first appointment begins with a detailed discussion of your medical history, including any previous ear conditions, noise exposure patterns, and current hearing concerns. Our Nurse Practitioner will take time to understand your needs and listen carefully to the symptoms you are experiencing.

We discuss factors that might affect your ear health, including your past medical history. This comprehensive approach ensures we identify all potential contributors to your current ear health status.

Advanced Microscope Examination Process

The examination itself is painless and typically takes 15 to 20 minutes. Using our specialist ENT microscope, we carefully examine the ear canal and ear drum for any signs of earwax buildup, inflammation, infection or structural abnormalities that could impact your ear health.

Using careful microsuction, your Nurse Practitioner makes use of precise, gentle suction to remove any earwax blockage that may be affecting your hearing or causing discomfort. Any infective debris can also be carefully removed with microsuction. Swab samples can also be sent for laboratory analysis (microbiology) to work out if there is any active infection and to guide antibiotic treatment, if needed.

The enhanced visualisation also allows us to assess the condition of your eardrum and identify any middle ear problems that might affect hearing. This detailed examination is particularly valuable for patients who have experienced hearing loss or are considering hearing aid options.

Integration with Hearing Services

Following the microscope examination, we often recommend a comprehensive hearing assessment to evaluate your current hearing levels. This combination of visual examination, microsuction treatment and audiological testing provides a complete understanding of your ear health and hearing function.

Ear Conditions We Assess and Identify

Otitis externa (skin infection affecting the ear)

By using careful mircosuction, our Nurse Practitioner can clear any infective debris from your ear canal. Sending microbiology swabs can also collect valuable information about any underlying infections. By finding out exactly what bacteria or fungal pathogens are present, your Nurse Practitioner can recommend exactly the right type of antibiotic, antifungal or steroid treatment. Such targeted treatment always help resolve infections as quickly as possible.

Otitis media (infection of the middle ear space)

By using careful mircosuction and a surgical microscope, our Nurse Practitioner can identify and assess infective changes behind the ear drum (tympanic membrane) in the middle ear space. Clearing infected fluid and debris, sending microbiology swabs and assessing any holes (perforations) in the ear drum or other processes (such as cholesteatoma) is well within the skill set of our Nurse Practitioner.

Comprehensive Aftercare

Following your examination, we provide detailed aftercare instructions. Sural ear or aural hygiene advice is very important to maintain the cleanliness and health of your ears. Simply keeping your ears dry and using cotton wool with vaseline to plug off your ears when washing, showering or bathing can really make a difference. Your Nurse Practitioner will be able to schedule any necessary follow-up appointments as well. Our commitment to your hearing health extends beyond the initial assessment.

When to Consider Specialist Assessment

Regular Health Monitoring

We recommend regular ear health assessment, particularly for individuals with risk factors such as chronic skin conditions (like eczema and psoriasis) or diabetes. Early detection allows for prompt intervention when needed.

Symptoms Requiring Assessment

If you’re experiencing ear discomfort or pain, ear discharge, ear swelling or hearing difficulties, specialist examination can identify underlying causes and guide appropriate treatment. Don’t wait for symptoms to worsen before seeking professional assessment.

      FAQs

Here you’ll find clear answers to common questions about hearing tests, hearing aids, and our appointments. We keep things simple and in plain English so you know exactly what to expect. If you cannot find what you need, just get in touch and we will be happy to help.

      • What is wax microsuction?

Wax microsuction is the precise clearance of wax from your ear canals. Microsuction involves your specialist using a surgical microscope and a small suction tube to, basically, “suck” out your ear wax (very slowly and carefully!).

Surgical microscopes give a complete and precise view of your ear canals, unlike other methods of clearing wax which use loupes (like magnifying glasses) or irrigators (squirty devices). Microsuction is by far the safest and most effective way of removing ear wax – don’t accept anything else!

      • Does wax microsuction hurt?

No, it is generally painless. Most people describe a slight tickling sensation. Discomfort is rare and usually caused by very hard or impacted wax.

      • Is micro suction safe for everyone?

Yes, it is one of the safest methods of cleaning ears and is suitable for people of all ages, including those with perforated eardrums and sensitive ear canals

      • Do I need to prepare before my appointment?

Yes, using olive oil drops a few days before microsuction will help soften wax, making the procedure more comfortable.

      • How long does the procedure take?

Around 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the amount and consistency of wax or debris. We take our time and make sure it is done properly!

      • Are there any side effects or risks?

Very occasionally, people can describe symptoms of slight dizziness, mild irritation and brief changes in hearing following microsuction. However, these symptoms usually settle very quickly and we always suggest people sit in the waiting area for a while after microsuction.

We have an unlimited supply of tea available, please just sit and make yourself comfortable, before you head home
